Abstract

The aim of this paper is to emphasize the necessity to improve the use of those investigative met-hods and tools which are most adequate for specific type of evidence connected with certain types of criminal activities. In other words, criminal investigations often prove fruitless due to the fact that the applied methods and techniques of collection, preservation, analysis and/or assessment of evidence (traces) fail to produce the type of evidence considered typical for certain crimes. It has become obvious that alongside vvith footprints and scent evidence, in the Republic of Croatia there is another uncovered area, i.e. audio forensics. The sound is not only an immanent part of our everyday lite - it can play an important part in committing crime. In many cases sound anal-ysis covers different aspects of crime investigation. The paper discusses the major issues of audio forensics as well as the application of commercially available computer programs and tools used for audio forensic purposes.
