Abstract

After IFLA has published the document Statement of International Cataloguing Principles in February 2009., which is based on FRBR and FRAD conceptual models, it is IFLA’s recommendation to revise and adjust international and national cataloguing rules in accordance with the proposed principles. Since FRBR is a conceptual model, IFLA Study Group on the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records recommends investigating the model more thoroughly so that it could be applicable on descriptions of different types of documents, particularly in making and revising international and national cataloguing regulations. Identifying and defining the attributes of entities for different types of documents are presumed to be especially relevant for the model’s development because the attributes of entities serve as the means by which users formulate their queries.
Croatian national bibliographic practice and bibliographic standards are based on Eva Verona’s Code and Manual for the Compilation of Alphabetical Catalogues, while the ISBD standards ISBD(CR) and ISBD(ER) are used for describing digital documents. The paper analyzes the functionality of the attributes of entity manifestation within framework of FRBR model in describing and retrieving digital documents on the example of the Catalogue of National and University Library in Zagreb. Through the analysis of cataloguing descriptions of digital documents we explored the manifestation of attributes of entity manifestation in the descriptions and their relationship to ISBD elements. The results of the analysis show that the attributes of entity manifestation generally do find their equivalents in ISBD data elements used in the descriptions of sampled digital documents. The only exception is the information about the date of access to the document, which is very important for this type of documents, and, according to the ISBD rule, should be included in the notes relating to the item described, but does not have its equivalent within the FRBR model.
We extracted the attributes of entity manifestation which are problematic in their implementation on describing and retrieving digital documents, as well as those attributes which have exceptional significance in relation to user tasks. Some other difficulties and specificities which are related to the nature of digital documents are described, too.
