Abstract
This work outlines the characteristics of primary-school children’s notion of death, their reactions to the death of their loved ones and needs which adults, to whom they become even more dependent in the circumstances of lost, can meet. The preconditions of successful assistance to children who mourn the deceased are; knowing and acknowledging the issues of death as an integral part of life, understanding the nature of children’s confrontation with death and the possible mistakes of adults who try to help a mourning child. The mistakes can result from ignorance but also from unresolved personal experiences with death, loss and grief. Special emphasis is placed on the role of school and teachers in death and loss situations and on their help to children so that they could end their grief and continue their development and studying without any disturbances.
