Abstract
This paper deals with ninety examples of ancient lamps in different states of preservation which are housed in the archaeological collection of the Regional Museum in Benkovac. The exact findspot is unknown for most lamps whereas only smaller number was recovered in the course of the rescue archaeological excavations on the sites of Benkovac – Glogovac and Buković – Ponaiti, or in the field survey of the archaeological sites in Nadin (Nedinum), Podgrađe (Asseria) and Ostrovica. Lamp from the site of Smilčić – Pržine was found during soil tillage and it belongs to a grave unit whose inventory was donated to the museum. Typologically lamps belong to Loeschcke types I, IV, VIII and Broneer type XXVII. In addition to typologically determinable examples, in the collection there was also a number of examples which could not be classified typologically due to poor state of preservation. The earliest examples of Loeschke type I are dated to the end of of the first century BC and the beginning of the first century AD whereas examples of Broneer type XXVII are dated to the period of the second half of the second century and the first half of the first century AD.
