Marulić's Conception fo the Sacrament of Confession
Mladen Parlov
Abstract
Expounding the material relating to the sacrament of confession, Marulić is revealed as someone who knows well the scriptures, the patristic writings and the theology of his own times. He expounds various matters related to confession in a language that he has absorbed from repeated re-readings of the Bible and the works of the Fathers of the Church, particularly of St Jerome and Augustine. Nevertheless, with respect to the theological understanding and interpretation of the sacrament of confession, he follows the results arrived at by the great Schoolmen, especially St Thomas Aquinas.
For Marulić, confession was undoubtedly one of the sacraments that Christ established and confided to his Church as help for the baptized on the road to salvation. He stresses the personal dimensions of the sacrament of confession (repentance), not forgetting to put stress on the ecclesiastical dimension as well (ab-solution by the priest, the servant of the church). He knows and expounds all the essential parts of the sacrament of confession, placing the emphasis on the act of contrition.
Writing of the sacrament of confession, Marulić shows himself to be some-one who knew sacramental theology well. But he does not present any original solutions (like, for example, De Dominis later on), rather treads in the well-trod-den paths of Patristic and Scholastic theology.
