Models of children's strategy choices in solving arithmetical problems

Abstract

Numerous studies show that children have at their disposal and use multiple strategies for solving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems. The choice between different strategies is adaptive, which means that in accordance with the problem's characteristics children tend to choose the fastest and the most accurate strategy which is available to them. In this review the most influential models of children's strategy choices in solving arithmetical problems are analyzed and critically compared: metacognitive models, Distribution of Associations Model (Siegler, Shrager, 1984), Adaptive Strategy Choice Model (Siegler, Shipley, 1995) and Children's Strategy Choices and Strategy Discoveries Model (Shrager, Siegler, 1998).
