Abstract

Verka Škurla-Ilijić is not a widely acknowledged author although her writing marked by details and images should testify to her artistic value. This particularly refers to her prose writing containing some memorable pages, while her dramatic contribution is quite modest and remains remembered more for its contested nature and polemical echoes, than for its value and the part it played in the development of Croatian drama. Both of her plays, Part of the Road (Komad puta) and On Thin Ice (Na tankom ledu), represent facts of dramatic history rather then being an experience marked by a relevant semantic potential. This paper on Verka Škurla-Ilijić fits into the wider context of the discussed topic. It is more of a reminder of the name with its roots from the Island of Hvar than it is an encouragement to revive her work dramaturgically.
