Abstract

In the article, the author presents a definition of audiovisual media services and analyses the historical development of the EU regulative framework. Moreover, she scrutinises current legislative solutions stressing the Audiovisual Media Service Directive and “Television without Frontiers” Directive. Furthermore, the author analyses in details basic principles related to the audiovisual media services, for example the country of origin principle and freedom of receiving services, as well as principles related to advertising, product placement and sponsorship. She clarifies the meaning of the notion of European works and explores principles and legal rules governing the protection of minors and prohibition of incitement to hatred and spreading discrimination. A special attention has been given to legal rules regulating the access to the services for the sight- and / or hearing impaired. The article presents an overview of the relevant European court practice in the field of audiovisual media services.
