Abstract

With the arrival of Ivan Dominik Stratiko on the island of Hvar, that island became a place of Enlightenment’s activities and modernization change. Welcoming speech on the occasion of Stratiko’s enthronement as the new bishop held by the doctor of Hvar and his friend Julije Bajamonti contains a description of conditions and different problems of the island of Hvar and Dalmatia in the 18th century. Bajamonti’s speech is also an example of extensive knowledge of the leading Enlightenment ideas among the Dalmatian educated elite and a review of proposals for their concrete application in Dalmatia. Ivan Dominik Stratiko participated in many of the reforms presented in Bajamonti’s programmatic speech. Despite the remarkable Enlightenment’s activities, Stratiko was not spared of criticism, conservatism, misunderstandings and accusations of the community in which he lived and worked. In the second section of the paper we analyze the letters in which priest from the island of Korčula denounced to the Vatican bishop Ivan Dominik Stratiko as member of brotherhood of the Freemasons.
