Abstract
There is currently a problem in that Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) do not have a clear framework that serves to guide their creativity and innovative endeavours. It is unclear how existing theories and perspectives concerning creativity and innovation could be consolidated so that an appropriate organizational model could be developed to assist the vast majority of SMEs in a continuously changing business environment.
The aim of this article is to develop an organizational model of creativity and innovation (OMCI) applicable to small and medium enterprises in Croatia, which, in turn is based on the concept of networked creativity.
This article takes the form of a literature study of current practical and theoretical views on creativity and innovation that result in the formation of a new organizational model of creativity and innovation for SMEs in Croatia. Furthermore, the development of the model commences from the clarification of the internal and external support factors that are necessary in creating an effective innovative climate within small and medium enterprises.
A wide-ranging literature study has indicated that external support factors include a stimulating environment of a wider community and the existence of either a national or regional action plan for encouraging innovation under the assumption that EU funds have already been earmarked for this. Internal support encompasses networked creative individuals and teams; an organization’s innovative climate, HR innovation strategies, as well as the charismatic and emotional intelligence of innovative leaders who are prepared to reward creative initiatives within an organization.
The article introduces the first phase of research and serves as a basis for the preparation of an empirical investigation with regard to the applicability of the OMCI model to small and medium enterprises in Croatia.
