Abstract

The aim of the work is to investigate the frequency of Human papilloma virus (HPV) infections in female sexual organs in the Zadar County Public Health Centre area, by analyzing koilocytes – cytologically recognizable infected epidermal HPV cells in ervicovaginal smears. Cervicovaginal smears are obtained through the exfoliative method according to Papanicolaou in the female population of urban – tourist and rural – non-tourist environments. The research was carried out in the period from January 1, 2007 to
December 21, 2009. 5,473 cervicovaginal smears were analyzed of which no presence of koilocytes was found in 90 of them.
In the urban tourist population there were 55 koilocytes in 3,015 VCE smears and in the prevailingly rural and non-tourist population there were 35 koilocytes in 2,368 VCE smears. In both observed populations most of the koilocytes were found in the age group 20-29 years of age (30/55; 17/35), in the mature life stage espectively.
