Abstract
Aim: To determine the number of contacts of active tuberculosis in whom infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis has occurred, depending on the type of contact and based on tuberculin testing and monitoring of contacts over five years. Methods: In the period from 2003 and 2004 in outpatient Clinic for Lung Diseases of Clinic for Pulmology, 164 people were treated who were in contact with tuberculosis. Tuberculin test was used to diagnose tuberculosis infection. The contacts were tracked through check-ups and the Register for tuberculosis. Results: Contacts were aged 19-79 years and there was a total of 84.2 % of tuberculin reactors. In the year 2003 there were no patients with active tuberculosis, however in 2004 at the time of contacts’ screening we verified two people suffering from active tuberculosis (3.1 %). In 2004 two people were suffering from active tuberculosis, a contact from the year 2003 (2 %), from 2006 and a contact from 2004 (total 4.7 %), which means that of 164 contacts five were infected (3 %). Conclusion: The results of tuberculin test show that the majority of respondents were infected. In the contacts of the first order, if tuberculin-positive, there must be an additional diagnosis, such as lung radiogram. It is necessary to monitor tuberculosis contacts for at least two years, particularly those with strong and very strong tuberculin reaction (>15mm).
