Abstract

The paper contains an overview of international police cooperation in terms of the candidate countries in the EU accession process. This paper analyzes the current legal and institutional development of cooperation within the European Union, the most important characteristics and problems that occur in the process. In particular, it gives an overview of cooperation in protecting the borders, the Schengen area and police powers that are to be developed to en-sure efficient protection. It portrays the totality of co-operation, through a strategies of com-petent bodies of the Union within the legal and institutional framework. The work does not follow the numerical changes resulting from changes in the basic legal acts of the Union but indicates the relationship between national law and EU law in co-operation, development institutions and their powers, the need for harmonization of law and institution building at the national level, the importance of compliance with the rules of criminal procedure for cooperation and finally, possible problems of co-operation.
