Other
Religious and social determinants of pilgrimage (II)
Jakov Jukić
Abstract
In the second part of his article the writer describes first the reaction
of pious folks to the secular character of the crusades and mentions
various mediaeval charismatic movements and children’s crusades. This
resulted in a spiritualisation of the social act of pilgrimage, especially
with Christian mystics and muslem sufis. After that the author offers
some elements for a sociology of pilgrimage, and at the end of the
article he considers the phenomenon of contemporary tourism as a
secular surrogate of the religious need of pilgrimage. In the modern
enthusiasm for tourism the author sees man’s hidden nostalgia for
going on pilgrimage towards the sacred.
