Complicated Urinary Tract Infections - Urological Aspects
Nikola Knežević
; KBC Zagreb
Abstract
Complicated urinary tract infections (UTI) associated with structural or functional abnormality of the urinary tract are of the primary urological interest. Management of the urological abnormality is often necessary to cure UTI and to prevent recurrent infection. A wide variety of both congenital and acquired urinary abnormalities, which cause obstruction and stasis of urine flow, may lead to complicated UTI. Complicated urinary infections of the kidney may be associated with complications (pyonephrosis, renal abscesses, emphysematous pyelonephritis, xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis) which require urgent urological treatment, including nephrectomy.
