Abstract

Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma spp. are proven pathogens causing urogenital infections, as well as generalized infections in immunocompromised patients and neonates. M. genitalium is a causative agent of nongonococcal urethritis in men. Mycoplasmas may be involved in preterm birth and other complications in pregnancy. The controversy remains due to the investigations that neglect bacterial vaginosis, which involves a large number of diverse bacteria, and due to the failure to differentiate their role from that of mycoplasmas. Microbiological diagnosis is based on the detection of mycoplasmas in clinical specimens by applying molecular methods and isolation on nutrient media. For M. genitalium molecular methods are the main diagnostic tool. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of mycoplasmas has been recently standardized and agar dilution or broth dilution method for determination of minimal inhibitory concentrations is recommended.
