Abstract

In the paper, the author deals with the Old Mass of Solin, still performed by the ensemble Pučki Pivači of the church of Our Lady of the Islet (Gospa od Otoka) as a part of the folk liturgical music heritage. This ensemble has preserved numerous chants rooted in the Glagolitic tradition. The paper briefly presents the history of the ensemble and the basic characteristics of their singing (with a particular emphasis on sacral chants). Although it presents a brief review of other mass chants as well, the paper firstly deals with singing of the unchanging parts of the mass (ordinarium missae) - the practice that still can be heard in the church of Our Lady of the Islet in Solin in the course of the liturgical year. Aimed to detection of certain - in the folk tradition often present - natural changes in the performance or in the very melodics, and for particular comparison sake, the paper besides the recent version (transcription) of the Solin Mass also presents results of several relevant researches by two more authors, Vladimir (Vladoje) Bersa (1864-1927) and Jerko Martinić (1926), made in the years 1906 and 1974 respectively. Furthermore, as a brief comparison - aimed to a better understanding of organic connections of the Solin mass chant with similar chants of other nearby places (Klis, Vranjic, Mravince, Kučine) - a well laid-out parallel between them is presented.
