Abstract

In my brief analysis of the first three books of Marulić’s Davidias, I begin by examing the Christian rejection of classical mythology, a topos of which the humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam was also very fond.
Then I deal with the sources (classical, Early Christian and high medieval) that Marulić may have used; but the results of my inquiry, grounded on Professor Novaković’s excellent work, are not yet decisive and the subject needs further examination.
Finally my reading of the characters highlights the poet’s exceptional dexterity in describing his heroes in a very dramatic and effective way.
