Abstract

The presence of fungi Chalara fraxinea in Croatia was determined in 2009 on common ash. The fact that C. fraxinea causes significant ash dieback across Europe and is on the EPPO Alert List, pointed to the need to determine its distribution in Croatia. The survey covers sites of common (Fraxinus excelsior) and narrow-leaved ash (Fraxinus angustifolia), and the results of research and on the ground indicate the need for additional research in order to obtain more detailed insight on the presence of pathogens and the implementation of protection measures. During the research 33 visual inspections were obtained in an area of 299 hectares. Symptoms were observed at 20 sites and a total of 27 samples taken for laboratory analysis. After analysis 24 samples collected from 19 sites confirmed the presence of disease. Future research should be directed towards obtaining data for the preparation of guidelines, risk assessment and as a basis for the adoption of protective measures which will help to preserve the ash in Croatia.
