Abstract

The author has chosen nine poems from the collection of poems called Mali otok pa se ljulja (Small island so it sways) written by Toni Cukrov, and the poems have been written in the speech from the small Dalmatian island of Prvić.
In the introduction of this work, the author discusses the phenomenon of an enormous production of vernacular idioms in recent times in Croatia. The quality of that poetry is very low, and it is based on usage of a local idiom which is, in relation to standard language, stylistically marked. That stylistic value, alongside the sentimental relation towards the homeland, its idiom, and its archaic forms of past times, are very often the only values of such texts. Among those texts, collections of poems that stand out based on some literary criteria are very rare. According to the author’s opinion, the collection of poems called Small island so it sways, written by Toni Cukrov from the island of Prvić, is one of those collections. The author has interpreted select poems, and based on the conducted stylistic analysis he has evaluated Cukrov’s poetic work distinguishing him as a poet who, because of that particular work, has earned his place in Croatian literature, as opposed to many other poets who also write in vernacular idioms, but who have never reached the poetic level of a valuable literary work with their verses.
This work is particularly interesting because it is one of the rare works in Croatian literary science which deals with vernacular stylistics.
