Abstract

This paper analyzes the methodology of systematic field survey on the case study of northwestern Istria. The field research methodology was based upon intensive field survey and topographic survey of hillfort sites. The analysis of the obtained results is focused on estimation of the success in detecting different types of sites while the problem of under-representation of historical periods and the interpretation of offsite finds are also discussed. The resulting potential for understanding complex historical processes is also considered. The conclusion provides an overview of the wider research context and the applicability of the survey methodology.
