Abstract
In the Austrian-Hungarian Monachy, the railway network made the creation of a single socio-economic space possible. The integration Podravina in the economic structure of the Monarchy was
helped by the building of the region’s railway lines. After the Peace Treaty of Trianon, because of the new boundaries, these lines became fragmented and some of the local ones even seized to exist! After
Croatia’s EU accession, with the integration of our southern neighbour into the Schengen zone, Podravina will become an active part again in the united European economic space. In our study, we examine
the role that rail can play in reintegration. This potential is examined from the perspective of rail border crossings, and the Croatian-Slovenian-Hungarian three sided border. We furthermore outline
the effects of the expected and the already ongoing renovations.
