Abstract
Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XPN) is an uncommon and distinct type of chronic pyelonephritis. It is characterized by a destructive mass that invades the renal parenchyma and the exact etiology is still unknown. XPN is most frequently confused with renal carcinoma in its clinical presentation and radiographic appearance. Nephrectomy is still the criterion standard for XPN treatment, and medical therapy has proven sufficient for XPN treatment in only a handful of cases. We report a case of a patient with focal XPN with characteristic radiological findings and immediate response to standard antibiotic treatment
avoiding unnecessary nephrectomy and preserving renal function.
