The 1628 collective register of market towns and villages in the Branjin Vrh district (Baranyavar, Burunovar)

Abstract
The registers in Turkish, written in Arabic script that
were sent to Vienna after liberation of Budim in 1686, where
they were translated by the German Heinrich Cristoph
Schwegler, include a register of villages and market towns
in the Branjin Vrh district from 1628. The translation manuscript
is preserved in Finanz und Hofkammerarchiv in
Vienna, in the manuscript collection.
The Branjin Vrh district included 44 villages and
settlements with 972 cottages, to be precise little houses.
Apart from a place name, the original document in Turkish
comprised the number of cottages in each place, the names
of their owners and the names of market towns where the
customs officers (emines) resided all the time.
The place names as read and written by the translator
Schwegler, are considerably deformed and thus mostly unsolvable.
Namely, there are either no close or similar place names
in historical topographies of the Baranya county or
lack of imagination to notice this.
In spite of German translation imperfections, the 1628
collective register of Branjin Vrh district is a precious historical
source of the number of villages and larger settlements,
general population condition and ethnic population
composition of the above-mentioned area.
