Abstract

The Museum of Slavonia holds 15 librarian items by
Stjepan Srkulja (1869 – 1951), mostly textbook literature.
Nowadays his name is referred to textbook literature. He
wrote textbooks in almost all state boundaries that he had
lived in. They are are a striking example of history policy.
He was a secondary school teacher in Zagreb, a long-term
editor of the Teaching journal and the president of the Croatian
secondary school teacher association. His bibliography
comprises over 60 titles. Besides being professionally
active he was also politically active – a mayor of Zagreb in
some crucial periods of Croatian history (1917 - 1919 and
1928 - 1932), one of the leading persons of Croatian community,
a minister in governments of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
Some inhabitants of Zagreb put him in connection
with the Dolac market, once a pride of Zagreb, but at the
same time not a single street in Zagreb is named after him.
All these facts arise interest in Stjepan Srkulja, moreover
there are very few data about him in literature (and the Internet)
akthough such a person undoubtedly deserves to be
historiographically evaluated. This paper attempts to add
a contribution to some future research on Stjepan Srkulja
in a trial to reconstruct his biography on a basis of already
published information.
