Abstract

The new technology of strengthening rectangular piers with FRP strips is presented. The envelopment of the pier core with the existing transverse steel reinforcement and FRP strips is assumed. Appropriate expressions from European, American and New Zealand regulations, and latest proposals submitted by researchers, are used in the calculation of the quantity of reinforcement to be placed around the pier. Experimental studies of the behaviour of strengthened piers point to an increased bearing capacity, ductility, and significant energy absorption capability.
