Abstract

The conjunction ne samo… nego/već(i) (not only... but) connects constituents on all syntactic levels: on the level below sentence as well as on sentence and text levels. Only in coordinate sentences the conjunction ne samo da/što... nego/već (i) occurs as well. Sentences with these conjunctions can be conjunctive as well as adversative. This depends on whether the predicates are negated and whether an antonymous relationship exists between the constituents. The conjunction ne samo… nego/već(i) in dependent sentences is independent of the subordinators with which it is in chance contact: the dependent clauses with their conjunctions fit the coordination gradation framework. That these conjunctions are not complex gradation and temporal, gradation and causal, etc. is shown by the fact that within the gradation Ne samo... nego/već (i). Ne samo… nego/već(i) framework it is not necessary that two clauses of the same type with their subordinators occur.
