Abstract
In this in vitro study the occurrence o f dentinal crazing following the placement of self-threading pins by two methods was observed by SEM. The crowns o f 12 nonacarious third molars were resected 2 mm
above the cementoenamel junction, and occlusal parts were discarded. Three pin channels were prepared using the handpiece (at the speed of 30000 rpm) in each sample. Pins were placed manually and with motor drive. The third, control, pinhole was without a pin. After the dehydration in ascending grades of alcohol, specimens were examined by SEM. Craze lines in dentine were recorded in 55% of samples where placed manually and 50% o f samples with pins placed the handpiece. In the control pinholes, the craze lines appeared in 17% o f samples. The results showed that there is no significant difference in the occurrence of craze lines between pins seated manually of with the motor drive (handpiece).
