Dental Identification of Victims of the War in Croatia

Abstract

Is this paper the authors report on their experience in the personal
identification of war victims from three mass graves in the district of
Pakrac and Saborsko. The bodies o f 27 killed civilians were ecovered:19 males and 8 females. Personal identification o f the victims was performed at the Department o f Forensic Medicine and Criminology, School o f Medicine in Zagreb. A forensic odonto-stomatologist from the School o f Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb, participated in the identification process by carrying out dental identifications. A total o f 26 victims (96%) were positively identifies, while one body (4%) is at present still unidentified. Identification by collaborating evidence (sex, age, height, personal documents, dress, jewelry) was achieved in 73% o f the cases. Personal identification based on dental identification was achieved in 23% on the cases. The most useful dental characteristics for the purpose o f identification were fixed and removable prosthetic appliances for oral rehabilitation.
