Abstract

A summary of literature on the etiology of oral cancer is given. Alcohol and tobacco have been accepted as independent risk factors for oral cancer. Factors such as occupation, nutrition, dental status, host factors, viral infections and premalignant lesions are related to the etiology of oral cancer. Is appears that the lower part of the oral cavity is more related to carcinogens than other sites in the oral cavity. Possible local and systemic factors and alcohol carcinogenesis responsible for these variations of susceptibility for the use of alcohol and tobacco within the oral cavity are discussed.
