Abstract

A cohort of 413 textile industry workers were randomly chose to assess the presence of professional abrasion notches (dental fissures) as a result of manufacture technology. It was found that 168 (4.06%) examined workers temporarily or permanently bite the thread instead of cutting it by the scissors during the working process, as regulated by the technological process. Dental fissures were only detected in the workers reporting to bite the thread (P<0.01). So, dental fissures were found in 45 (10.9%) out of the total of 413 subjects examined, and in 26.8% of those using their teeth to bite the thread (N=45).The occurrence of dental fissures was found to be related to the duration of tooth exposure to stress (Q-0.45), thread quality (Q=0.55) and misinterpretation of the problem by the workers.
