Abstract
Describing several cases odontogenic cysts and tumors, the authors point to some settled misconceptions about the rate of growth of odontogenic pathologic alterations. The cases presented clearly indicate that the rate of growth of such formations need not always be the same or even similar, but that it depends on numerous factors, some of which can be demonstrated by objective methods. According to literature data, the rate of growth of odontogenic cysts is, among others , determined by the factor of epidermal growth, and the rate of growth of odontogenic tumors by the factor of growth transformation. The cases presented point to the importance of occasionally negligible bone translucences, from which expansive formations of a specific growth dynamics and other characteristics may develop within a relatively short period of time. Literature data and the presented cases show the need of further experimental studies to help objectify the mentioned pathology.
