Abstract

This investigation deals with a complex relationship o f an altered saliva quantity and p H on caries appearance in individuals suffering
from deseases o f the upper digestive tract (n = 101) in relation to healthy individuals (n = 78). Greater caries prevalence was found in individuals suffering from deseases o f the upper digestive tract (p < 0,01). Caries prevalence was significantly greater (p < 0,01) as stimulated salivary secretion and p H was lower in the both groups.
There was no significant difference in caries prevalence and different p H o f nonstimulated saliva in the control individuals (p > 0,05). Individuals suffering from cronical deseases o f the upper digestive
tract are exposed to an increased caries risk when accompanied with a longlasting or frequent low salivary flow and decreased salivary pH.
