Dental amalgam has been the material o f choice for the posterior tooth fillings for the past 150 years. Presented in this paper are the historic development o f amalgam, its obligatory composition, as well as the division o f different types o f amalgam according to the quantitative content o f copper and the shape o f the particles. Also, the properties o f amalgam with special regard to its toxicity are listed. It is well known that, over the past few years, attacks on dental amalgam have intensified, both in scientific and popular literature, concerning its possible pathologic impact on human body.
