Correlation of Blood-Glucose Level and Adrenaline-Added Local Anaesthesia

Abstract

The aim of this study is an evaluation of the interdependence of blood-glucose level and concentration of adrenaline added to a local anesthetic normally used in oral surgery. The study includes 60 middle-aged examinees o f both sexes. A t the admission, the blood-glucose level was found normal in all persons and according to their anamnesis, there were no records of diabetes mellitus. Prior to the surgery, 30 patients were injected adrenaline-enriched local anaesthetic, while another 30 controls were administered local anaesthetic alone. Totally 180 measurements of blood-glucose level were performed prior to the surgical operation, 15 minutes following the onset of the surgical operation, and immediately after the operation. The recorded data were statistically processed and no statistically significant differences were found between two investigated groups.The results obtained in both groups indicate that a small quantity o f adrenaline added to the local anesthetic (0,025 mg per 2 ml) does not significantly influence the concentration of glucose in the blood.
