Abstract

The topic of this paper is to present and to analyze the results
of a research, carried out in Austria, on the quality of liturgical
celebrations, particularly the quality of preaching performances.
This work primarily points out the importance of preaching today,
for which apart from theological there are also some purely practical
reasons. Relevant church documents indicate the important role
of sermons in the overall process of proclamation and point out
that the ministry of proclamation holds the central place in the
presbyter’s life. Having explained the need for preaching today,
the paper also indicates, on the basis of the mentioned research,
some expectations of the listeners about the sermon and the
preacher, as well as the most common listeners’ objections to the
preacher. The mentioned expectations and objections refer both to
the content and to the style of preaching. The last part of the work
deals with some difficulties of preaching ministry, the hazards
that can befall a preacher, and some essential elements of that
ministry, such as the authentic and credible preaching, personal
preparation for the ministry of preaching, taking into account the
listeners’ needs in their life situation, the issues of writing and
length of the sermon, as well as the appearance on the pulpit. The
results of here analyzed research represent a good platform for
critical and self-critical reflection on sermons and on those whom
that task is due to.
