Abstract

In a group o f 350 geriatric patients aged 65-94 years, an epidemiologic study was carried out to assess the state o f teeth and
prosthetic appliances. Poor general state o f teeth and prosthetic appliances was observed. From the total number o f 350 patients examined, 75 % were completely toothless. Among 264 toothless patients, 50% did not wear prostheses, whereas 60% o f prosthetic appliances were assessed as unsatisfactory, requiring repair or replacement with a new one. Conservative treatment, oral surgical intervention and prosthetic rehabilitation were required in 85% o f
the subjects examined. According to our opinion, better dental care
for these patients and alleviation o f their discomforts related to oralcavity might be achieved by inclusion o f preventive measures concerning the ways and control o f regular oral hygiene in these
patients into nurse education, and inclusion o f dental medical doctors
in the geriatric medical teams.
