Abstract

A clinical study of marginal caries was caried out in teeth with amalgam and silicate fillings between one and five years old. The teeth had previously been treated at various dental outpatient clinics in Zagreb, in a population aged 20— 32 years. Four hundred and ten teeth with amalgam fillings and 314 teeth with silicate fillings were included in the study. A very high percentage of marginal caries was recorded. The margins of amalgam fillings were found to be more frequently affected by marginal caries than those of silicate fillings(70.49% vs 55.73%; p < 005). According to the age of fillings, among the amalgam fillings an increase in marginal caries was obesrved to become statistically significant in three-year fillings (p < 0.005), whereas among the silicate fillings it was so> as early a>s between the first and second year (p < 0.1). This finding was related to the way o f treatment of cavity margins, treatmet and polishing of fillings, quality of the material, time standards of conservative tooth therapy procedures, nutrition and oral hygiene in a population.
