Abstract

The current concept of pathohistologic alternations during the initial
phase of dental caries is presented. It is emphasized that the »white spot« should be registered as an initial carious lesion, and the required efficient preventive measures taken in such cases.
Initial caries can be demonstrated radiographically, but such a diagnosis should not be mere routine. In suspect cases, early detection of an initial carious lesion can be facilitated by the bite wing X-ray technique, with due precautions and protective measures taken for both the patient and the X-ray technician. In conclusion, epidemiological data are presented, pointing to a decline in the prvalence of caries in developed countries, and reasons for
this described.
