Abstract

The paper presents the approach to the safety from fire and explosions in the design, construction and operation of gas lines. A few years ago, the Government of Croatia adopted a national energy program, PLINCRO, which is the plan for the construction of gas lines and gas supply until 2010. It involves the construction of new main, regional and connecting gas lines, in addition to those already in existence. Hazards of fire and explosion are great in gas lines, but they are frequently ignored. This paper attempts to indicate the importance of safety and protection from fire and explosion in design, constructions and operation of gas lines. Sources and causes of fire are shown, as well as preventive measures to remove threat of fire and explosion. Danger zones around above-ground facilities are indicated, along with a fire and explosion hazard assessment for terminals, using the Dow method.
Gas line Pula-Karlovac DN 500/75 is quoted as a concrete example of construction. This gas line is part of the planned and constructed gas line system in Croatia connecting the North Adriatic gas fields and Italy’s gas line system with the gas line system of Croatia. The paper describes concrete measures for removing hazard of fire and explosion and provides data on the gas line to illustrate the relevant magnitudes. Preventive and special measures are given.
