Abstract

The paper presents a biomechanical assessment of the forces and inertia to show the need for the use of a safety belt. The required biomechanical and ergonomic methodology is shown to present the method for the calculation of the forces acting on the driver in sudden stopping of a vehicle. Also shown is the adjustment of anthropometrical data for the selection of a suitable biomechanical model. Furthermore, the value of synthetic modelling is shown in comparison to the existing anthropometrical data relevant for our population. Finally, the paper gives a calculation of the forces that a driver may put to work using muscles and skeleton, showing also the possible effects of inertia on the selected model.
