Abstract

The paper deals with the development of the new, post- Common Slavic, length in Croatian in comparison with other Slavic languages. Various processes, such as the lengthening of the final syllable in the nominative singular in the accentual paradigm c, the contraction of vowels, the lengthening caused by the disappearance of jers in the preceding syllable, the lengthening in some nouns in a.p. b, the lengthening before sonants, the length in genitive plural and present tense tematic vowel, various analogical lengthenings and the phenomenon of kanovačko duljenje, are discussed.
