Abstract

The Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea with an indented coastline is very attractive for leisure crafts sailing. Although leisure crafts are often sailing in the warmer part of the year when the meteorological conditions are favourable, a considerable number of the crafts are involved in accidents at sea. Analysing the types and causes of these accidents, it is possible to find out why some accidents happen, and based on the obtained results and conclusions made, it is possible to propose some measures to prevent accidents at sea or reduce their consequences. In order to reach adequate conclusions on the possible causes of the accidents, the database of marine accidents, led by the National Center for Coordinating Search and Rescue at Sea, have been analysed. Leisure crafts are taken out of the database as a special category and are analysed based on the type of the crafts, number of the crafts, number of the accidents and time and place of the accident.
