Abstract

A new etymology of the Proto- Slavic word *d7ždž6 'rain' is given. It is possible that the word came from Pre-Proto-Slavic Indo-European form *dhu(s)- dju- , what possibly meant 'dew sky' . The etymology is confirmed by the connection of the meaning of 'dew' and 'rain' found in Croatian and other folk poetry. The part *dhu(s)- is connected with *dhow- o- s, what is reflected in Germanic *dawwaz, *dawwam 'dew' .
