Abstract

If a country, certain group of people, or an institution think that in a certain moment there exists a demand for something (need), they will organize what is necessary in order to create a “supply”. If that “supply” is in form of andragogical movements, then that is a response to a “demand” for as high number of educated adults as possible. Status and position of adult education in a country is a consequence of policy it is carrying out under the influence of certain needs and changes. In this article authors have given a brief historical review of andragogical movements: from Persia, ancient Greece and Rome, to andragogical movements in Great Britain, United States, Scandinavian countries, African countries, France, Germany and, in the end, andragogical movements in Croatia. Knowledge regarding development of adult education throughout history is necessary for its deeper understanding and complete consideration today, and for the more successful solving of contemporary problems and issues within this area. In order for the old to be able to teach the young about anything, they themselves need to be educated. From that premise follows a conclusion that adult education is a very important aspect of education in general!
