Abstract

This paper presents the results of empirical research on the role of vocational education as a function of employment. The survey was conducted during July 2010 in the city of Split on the sample of 299 respondents and has included 123 employed and 126 unemployed persons and 50 employers. This paper presents the analysis of attitudes towards vocational education, results of “hidden curriculum” in the context of education for the acquisition of knowledge and some aspects of upgrading / retraining of respondents. The authors point to the relation between knowledge and business opportunities, which is especially manifested within the modern labor market. Despite understanding importance of continuous improvement of professional knowledge within adult educational, most of the individuals have not yet participated in it, indicating the need for greater emphasizing of the importance of “education for the acquisition of knowledge”. Lifelong education, especially lifelong learning therefore occurs in response to the variable configuration of knowledge, implied on the labor market in a modern, highly differentiated society.
