Abstract

The terminal hinge axis can be determined in two ways, i.e. by an exact method and by the method of average hinge axis. In this study, the Lauritzen-set and SAM buccal arch with metal plates and graph paper were used for accurate localization of the hinge axis. Accuracy to which the hinge axis can be determined and incongruity between the hinge axis and articulator axis, which should be taken into account when using the method of average hinge axis, were investigated in this study. The values obtained on the lower model fitting against the exactly determined hinge axis varied by ± 8 mm from the mean value in the sagittal and vertical planes. The mean aberration of the values obtained with model fitting against the average hinge axis from the mean values obtained with model fitting against the exactly determined hinge axis was 4.7 mm in the sagittal plane.
