Abstract

In the period from 2009–2012, a total of 124 serum samples were tested at the Laboratory for serologic diagnosis, Croatian National Institute of Public Health for the presence of IgM/IgG antibodies to R. typhi and R. conorii using indirect immunofluorescence method. Participants were from twelve Croatian counties. Eight percent of patients demonstrated IgG antibodies to R. typhi, 29% of patients IgG antibodies to R. conorii while five subjects (4.0%) were seropositive to both rickettsia. Seroprevalence did not differ statistically among males and females as well as among age groups. Seropositive participants were from four counties of the coastal areas (Istria, Lika-Senj, Šibenik-Knin and Dubrovnik-Neretva county), three counties of eastern Croatia (Požega-Slavonija, Brod-Posavina and Osijek-Baranja county) and Zagreb county. During the tested period, acute murine typhus was not documented while the Mediterranean spotted fever was detected in 11 patients (positive for IgM/IgG antibodies) with a seasonal occurrence, from May to November.
