Abstract

Interrelationship between chronic pulpitis and hypercementosis was
studied. In total, 212 subjects (151 females and 61 males) with clinically established chronic pulpitis were examined. Open chronic pulpitis was observed in 47 (22%) and closed chronic pulpitis in 165 (78%) subjects. Hypercementosis was present in 14 (6.6%) subjects. It was found to be most prevalent in a group of subjects aged 16— 35 years. First lower and upper molars were observed to be most frequently involevd, followed by second upper and lower premolars, second lower and upper molars, and first upper premolars. The degree of root involvement was radiologically determined. Among 14 teeth affected by hypercementosis, 5 showed it to have invoved up to 1/3, 7 up to 2/3, and only 2 teeth more than 2/3 of the root length.
