Abstract

Lingual arch can be applied in its active and passive variant. In the former it is used for transverse expansion or contraction of the dental arch, and in the latter as a rigid support for various types of elastic wires generating local forces of different direction and intensity. In whatever type and design of the arch, with or without its additional elements, the direction and amount of forces by graph analytical method and the final effect on the teeth can be predicted. The assessment of the efficiency of the lingual arch in regard to transverse extension or compression of the dental arch is made possible by introducing the lateral elastic characteristics, I. E. the dependence between the transverse force and lateral displacement of the lingual arch at the point of force application. In the application of sliding spring frontal attachments, the extremely weak spring effect will be the result of the presence of the kinematic component in the attachment characteristic.
